Hahn Rowe
Nongak_tree_handm

Through electronic live sampling/processing Rowe’s intentions were to “retain the essence of the modern incarnation of Nong-ak music (the fluid and elastic sense of timing and form, extreme dynamic changes, complex rhythmic structuring) and allow it to freely extend itself into a contemporary electronic environment.”

The Nong-ak (or Rural Band Music, Farmers' Band Music) has its roots in Korean agrarian history.  Different theories as to its origins include the sowing and harvesting of fields, driving away evil spirits around the Lunar New Year, preparing the farmers for war, and emulating a troupe of mendicant Buddhist monks who went from house-to-house collecting money.

The epic nature of this piece (80 mins), it's high rhythmic pitch and long dynamic arcs demanded an entirely new range of mix to be at my fingertips.
